5 Ways to Set Up a Good Breakfast Routine
Weekday mornings can be tricky when you’re in a rush to get out the door. Getting a whole family dressed, fed, groomed and out the door to school on time is a set of time-sensitive tasks, where there is a strong relationship between the time left until school starts and the amount of “barking” of orders I give to my kids.
We all know that a balanced breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Here are 5 ways to set up a good breakfast routine.
5 ways to set up a good breakfast routine:
1) Grocery shop with breakfast in mind.
Stock up on breakfast staples each time you do your weekly grocery shop.
- Protein-rich breakfast foods like Greek yogurt, eggs, tofu, cashews, almonds, nut butters, chia seeds, flax seeds, milk.
- Oatmeal, cooked whole grains like quinoa.
- Bananas, apples, frozen berries, frozen mangos, oranges, kale, cucumber, mint.
2) Have the right kitchen tools for breakfast on the run:
- Portable cups with lids to allow drinking on the go
- Food storage tubs to allow eating oatmeal or yogurt on the run
- “Go-mugs” with a lid – allowing the drinking of hot drinks as you rush out the door.
Keep all your “breakfast tools” together in a small bin where they can be easily accessed when you need them most.
3) Stay ahead of the game
Consider preparing the night before, or even on the weekend for the week ahead
- Pre-portioned smoothie ingredients.
- Bags of trail mix
- Batches of mini-muffins
- Oatmeal
- Muesli
- Boiled eggs
- Portion out a small handful of nuts
4) Allow yourself enough time for breakfast but plan for the inevitable.
We’ve all slept through the alarm. Having ready-made grab and go foods will make this morning blunders more forgiving. Somehow the magical act of packaging up a food can make it more inviting to eat.
Sample on-the-go breakfast ideas include:
- Smoothie with added protein
- Granola + dried fruit + nuts + yogurt
- Mixed cereal + fruit cups or fruit sauce + cheese stick + cashews
- Mini-Carrot Pineapple muffins + yogurt cup
- Mini banana oatmeal muffins + hard-boiled eggs + latte in a go mug
5) Prevent your afternoon craving with a balanced breakfast
Busy professionals benefit from a balanced breakfast to fuel their busy days. Eating breakfast helps to prevent cravings and overeating later in the day
Put away your technology, allow yourself time to fuel up your gas tank before you are off to the races for the day. A good routine will help make mornings a breeze.
