Chocolate Fondue

I love chocolate.  It is my most sought after “treat”.  In preparation for Valentine’s Day, I wanted to share my favourite chocolate dessert: Chocolate Fondue.

Chocolate Fondue – melted chocolate served in a communal pot, inviting the sharing of fondue dippers.  Shared food invites connecting conversations and good feelings.  And whoops, when you lose a fondue dipper in the pot, you have to kiss your partner.

To me, fruit is the most perfect chocolate fondue dipper.

  • Bananas
  • Pineapple
  • Apples
  • Mango
  • Oranges
  • Grapes

Other dippers that my family and I like include:

  • Angel food cake
  • Pound cake
  • Marshmallows
  • Sugar cookies
  • Shortbread cookies
  • Pretzels

Chocolate Fondue Recipe

My favourite recipe for a chocolate fondue uses 2 ingredients – pure and simple:

  • one milk chocolate nougat bar (Toblerone®)
  • 36% M.F. whipping cream.

Simply melt the chocolate bar over low heat.  Gradually add in whipping cream, stirring in with a whisk.  You can adjust the amount of whipping cream for a thicker or thinner fondue, depending on your preference.  For a 200 gram chocolate bar, I would add in ~1/4 cup whipping cream.  You can adjust the amount of chocolate you need based on the size of your crowd.

Don’t bother reading the nutrition label on these ingredients – they are high in fat and sugar. And they taste delicious. This is soul-food that I want you to enjoy mindfully as part of your meal. How might you do that? Be fully present with the food. Use your senses to enjoy the food.  Notice the colour. Notice the smell. When you dip your strawberry in the chocolate, notice the flavour and textures. The contrast between the warmth of the chocolate and the coolness of the strawberry. Notice the creaminess of the chocolate with the juiciness of the strawberry.

So dim the lights and take some time to create a relaxed and pleasurable atmosphere to celebrate this year’s Valentine’s Day. Take a deep breath in, smell the food, and….savour every mouthful.
